Purpose and Drivers

Blockchain is currently addressing several systemic issues across various sectors. Trust gaps in centralised systems are driving the push toward decentralisation, while widespread fraud and a lack of transparency in financial and supply chains highlight the need for secure, resilient, and auditable infrastructure. Manual record-keeping is causing inefficiencies, delays, and added costs, driving the demand for digital transformation across industries.

Growing public and institutional distrust in intermediaries highlights the importance of data ownership, individual control over identity and assets, and robust mechanism for compliance and traceability. Additionally, digital exclusion in remote, Indigenous, and marginalised communities has intensified the need to align blockchain solutions with global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Blockchain has broad relevance, but currently it benefits predominantly financial services, supply chains and agriculture, humanitarian aid distribution, and indigenous data governance.
